Looking for a healthier alternative to regular rice idli? Give jowar idli a try! Jowar idli is a type of idli made with jowar flour instead of rice flour. 

It is a healthier alternative to traditional idlis as it is high in fiber and protein. Jowar idlis are also vegan and gluten-free. They can be made in the same way as regular idlis, by steaming them in idli moulds.

  • Preparation time- 10 minutes (soaking time 6-8 hours)
  • Cooking time- 10 minutes 
  • Total time- 20 minutes 
  • Servings- 15 people 


  • Jowar Flour- 2 cups
  • White, round urad dal – 1/2 cup
  • Red Poha / Pressed red rice- 1/2 cup
  • Fenugreek seeds – 1/2 tsp
  • Salt- as needed
  • Water- as needed or required for kneading


  • Thoroughly wash Jowar and Poha.
  • Soak black urad dal and methi seeds together in a bowl for 2 hours.
  • Grind Urad Dal to form a smooth paste, then grind Jowar. Add to Urad dal batter.
  • Mix well. Let the batter sit overnight so that fermentation can occur.
  • Add salt to the mixture.
  • Place an oiled idli plate inside and steam for 12-15 minutes. Let it cool.
