Any low glycemic (GI) fruits are recommended in 1-2 portions during the day for diabetes, both for those who are diabetic or even pre-diabetic. Fruits that can be taken are papaya, pomegranate, guava, all types of berries, kiwi, dragon fruit, green apple, sweetlime, jamun, stone fruits (plum, pears). Fruits to be avoided during the stage of diabetes are apple, pineapple, banana, mango, chikoo, oranges.
Low glycemic index (GI) foods are slowly digested, absorbed and metabolised, and hence causes a slower rise in blood sugar and won’t cause swings in your blood sugar (think of a roller coaster). These foods also help maintain optimal insulin levels and sensitivity and also helps protect the mitochondria (the powerhouse of our cells).
