Healing Journey: Fibromyalgia, Diabetes & Arthritis Through a Root-Cause Functional Medicine Approach
Patient: Female, Priyan (name changed) | Age: 48
Current Imbalance(s): Fibromyalgia (since 2010), Type 2 Diabetes, Arthritis, thyroid dysfunction
Therapies: Functional Medicine along with Holistic Integrative Medicine
Consulting Date: 18-3-2025
Medical History (Challenge): For more than 10 years, Priya lived with widespread body pain, fibromyalgia, arthritis, Type 2 diabetes, fatigue, brain fog, exhaustion and poor sleep. Everyday activities became increasingly difficult, while medications offered only temporary symptom relief. Alongside this: Type 2 Diabetes on Metformin, arthritis, high cholesterol, an underactive thyroid, hair thinning, slipping memory, and nerve pain recently requiring Pregabalin. She lived alone, and the quiet isolation was part of her body’s burden too, affecting both her physical and emotional wellbeing.
Looking Beyond the Diagnosis: Rather than treating each condition individually, our Functional Medicine team performed a comprehensive root-cause evaluation.
Investigations identified multiple interconnected contributors including chronic systemic inflammation, gut dysbiosis, Clostridial infection, heavy metal toxicity (lead, aluminium and mercury), mitochondrial dysfunction, insulin resistance, thyroid dysfunction, micronutrient deficiencies and impaired detoxification pathways. These underlying imbalances were driving persistent pain, fatigue, metabolic dysfunction and poor recovery.
Lead sensitises the central nervous system and lowers the pain threshold systemically — a key driver of her fibromyalgia. The same mitochondrial dysfunction disrupting her energy production was also driving insulin resistance — diabetes and chronic pain sharing one root cause.
Our Root-Cause Treatment Approach: Her personalized treatment program focused on restoring health at multiple levels simultaneously.
The program included anti-inflammatory nutrition, gut healing and microbiome restoration, infection management, heavy metal detoxification, correction of vitamin and mineral deficiencies, mitochondrial and metabolic support, blood sugar optimization, personalized supplementation, nervous system regulation, stress management, sleep optimization and gradual movement rehabilitation.
Progress was closely monitored through regular clinical assessments and laboratory investigations, allowing the treatment plan to evolve with her recovery.
- Gut healing & infection clearance — elimination diet, anti-Clostridial regimen, gut lining repair (glutamine), probiotic colonisation, liver support. → ESR fell from 80 to 10; UTI resolved completely.
- Detoxification — EDTA-based chelation for lead, aluminium and mercury; chlorella, spirulina, and glutathione support. → Lead fell 35% (58.85 → 38.31 µg/L); aluminium fell 30%.
- Nutritional rebuilding — full B-complex restoration, Vitamin D correction, iron and zinc, mitochondrial co-factors (CoQ10, lipoic acid, carnitine). → Vitamin D normalised; zinc improving.
- Metabolic support for diabetes — fenugreek and Jamun protocol, carbohydrate timing, mitochondrial restoration (treating diabetes and fibromyalgia through their shared root). → HbA1c fell from 6.1% to 5.8%.
- Nervous system regulation — diaphragmatic breathing, sun exposure and grounding, sleep optimisation, emotional safety at home. → A powerful accelerator, especially during her stay at home.
- Gentle movement — short walks building gradually, gentle yoga for stiffness, post-meal walking for glucose control. → Even minimal movement improved stiffness and post-meal energy.
The Outcome: Within three months, inflammation reduced, blood sugar control improved, vitamin deficiencies were corrected and heavy metal burden decreased significantly. She experienced meaningful reductions in body pain, stiffness and fatigue, improved mobility, better sleep, enhanced energy, healthier skin and hair, weight loss and greater independence in daily life. Daily chores done independently, walking and exercising regularly, significant weight loss, body pain and stiffness significantly reduced, UTI fully resolved, and — as she put it — a visible glow others commented on.
PS. A Turning Point They Didn’t Expect. Six weeks in, something shifted that wasn’t visible on any lab report. Priya returned to her parents’ home — familiar food, slower mornings, a dog that needed walking. She walked, slept without alarms, laughed genuinely. Cortisol dysregulation and social isolation are documented amplifiers of pain sensitisation; the safety and routine she found at home accelerated the protocol’s effect, and nervous system regulation became a formal pillar of treatment.
Clinical Perspective:
Fibromyalgia is not a mystery and is rarely an isolated pain disorder. It is often associated with chronic inflammation, gut dysfunction, mitochondrial impairment, nutritional deficiencies and metabolic imbalance. Diabetes and chronic pain share the same cellular root: treating mitochondrial dysfunction addresses both. Addressing these interconnected root causes through a personalized Functional Medicine approach can lead to meaningful improvements in chronic pain, fatigue and overall quality of life.
Every chronic condition has its own unique biology. While diagnoses such as fibromyalgia, asthma, Multiple Sclerosis, diabetes, acid reflux, IBS, autoimmune conditions, psoriasis, arthritis, thyroid, or hypertension may appear unrelated, they are often influenced by common underlying factors including chronic inflammation, gut microbiome imbalances, nutritional deficiencies, metabolic dysfunction, immune dysregulation and environmental exposures. At Wellfinity, our Functional Medicine team focuses on identifying and addressing these root causes through personalized, evidence-informed care. Results vary for every individual, but understanding why illness develops is the first step toward improving long-term health.
