A perfect healthy yet tasty dish to make for breakfast, lunch or even dinner. Jowar or rava or cream of sorghum is rich in protein, fiber, vitamins and minerals and also has great antioxidants properties.

Jowar is gluten-free and more importantly it is hydrolyzed slowly making it an ideal food to diabetic and celiac patients. The consumption of Jowar roti has a great advantage in long-run.

Tip: Replace jowar rava with any whole millets or coarsely ground millets in this recipe.

  •  Jowar Rava- 1cup
  • Sliced Onion – 1 medium size
  • Ginger – 1 inch
  • Garlic – 2 cloves (optional)
  • Cashews – 8-10 pieces
  • Vegetables – Finely sliced (beans, carrot, peas and other vegetables of your choice)
  • Roasted peanuts – 2 tsp (optional)
  • Spices to your taste (turmeric, black pepper, coriander powder) – 1 tsp
  • Ghee
  • Water

For Tadka

  • Mustard seeds
  • Cumin seeds
  • Turmeric powder
  • Dry red chillies
  • Chana dal
  • Urad dal
  • Moong dal
  • Curry leaves


  • Wash and soak jowar millet overnight or for at least 6 – 7 hours
  • Steam cook the jowar till the millet texture is slightly chewy in comparison to the other grains. If you would like them to be softer, then steam cook for 5-10 mins extra.
  • Take a pan, and add ghee and tadka ingredients
  • Add sliced onion and cook till it is transparent
  • Add vegetables, season with salt and cook well
  • In a pan take 2 cups of water and bring it to a boil
  • Simmer the gas then add jowar rava and let it cook for a few mins
